What's happening at Giant Store York

June 15, 2017

What a busy May! Here’s a few things that we’ve been up to;

Cyclocross Race Day Skills Workshop

As a follow up to our November session, this fast-paced skills training focused on linking up technical skills and how to put them into practice in race scenarios. It was also a good opportunity to train at maximal effort on a typical CX race course, with plenty of friendly rivalry amongst riders! All riders demonstrated significant gains by the end of the evening, ahead of round 2 of Yorkshire Summer Cross the following week at Wharf Meadows, Otley.

Network Rail Cyclescheme Road Show

We took our Giant York ‘Pop up Shop’ to the Network Rail offices along with our friends from Cyclescheme, to talk about the benefits of the Scheme. Employees can save at least 25% on a new bike by accessing the scheme. You choose your perfect Giant or Liv bike, hire it for an agreed length of time, then snap it up for a fraction of its original value. If your Employer offers cycle to work benefit and you’d like us to bring our ‘Pop up Shop’ to you, email us at info@giant-york.co.uk

Women and Cycling Conference

Nicola, our Store Manager, represented Giant York and Liv at the 2017 Women and Cycling Conference; an annual event inspiring more women to cycle more often, to more places. Nicola said “It was really great to see so many enthusiastic female cyclists in one place, ranging from local clubs such as the Yorkshire Lasses to world class athletes such as Lizzie Deignan”.

Liv Road Rides & Breeze Network Social Rides

We have run a range of social rides for our community of female cyclists throughout May, making the most of the weather! Our friendly social rides are relaxed, informal and welcoming, and a great introduction to group riding. Every other Thursday Nicola, our in-house Breeze Ride Leader, runs an evening social road ride which is approximately 20 miles at 15mph so a really nice leg-spinner. Keep an eye on www.giant-york.co.uk/en-GB/localevents for details and to sign up.

York Triathlon Club Time Trials

Now 4 years into our sponsorship of York Triathlon Club, we are continually looking at ways in which we can further support our local club. Throughout the summer we are helping out Kerry Archer, our Liv Ambassador and YTC committee member, with the organisation and delivery of a series of time trials. There was a fantastic turnout for the first race of the series at Towton on Sunday 14th May, including Giant York Team Riders, David Trotter, Tom Ramsay and Sven Siddle who turned out to support the event.

Liv Workshops – Maintenance Night

Our May Liv Workshop focused on how to clean and maintain your bike effectively, and how to identify when your bike is in need of repair or servicing. This not only reduces the likelihood of roadside issues but also makes for a much better cycling experience. The workshop was fully booked, and it was great to see a number of attendees adding to their knowledge from our Fix A Flat Workshop in April.

Our Liv Workshop’s are all free to attend, informal and relaxed, and a great way to meet fellow female cyclists from across York. Keep an eye on www.giant-york.co.uk/en-GB/localevents for details and to sign up.

Linda Perry said;

"A giant thank you to Nicola for the excellent workshop yesterday! I really appreciated the helpful and supportive way that Nicola explained how best to tackle changing a flat. It was also great to practice this in the warmth of the shop with a glass of wine!"

The Struggle

The Struggle, now in its second year, already has a reputation as Yorkshire’s toughest cycling event, spanning 108 miles and taking in seven of North Yorkshire’s notorious killer climbs. The Giant York Team volunteered to be on hand providing assistance (and motivation!) on the route as well as assisting sign on and marshalling.  Great to help out at such a seamlessly organised event, which judging by the riders faces certainly lived up to its name!

Keep posted for more great events and activities at Giant Store York and get cycling this Summer.
